There is a need for all humans to connect with the environment in some way. For some newcomers, they may have lived most of their lives in rural settings working closely with the natural world and living in an urban setting is new to them.

For most people, finding balance and mental health comes from interaction with natural settings or green spaces.  For most newcomers, outdoor Canada is a foreign environment and is unknown to them. Sometimes, they have heard stories or legends about Canada’s wildlife, insects, or forests and they may have no idea what kind of wildlife exists in Canada.

By knowing more about Canada’s natural surroundings, they can start to feel more included in the larger Canadian society and develop ownership and a sense of connection to their new land. This will, in turn, increase awareness and involvement in the society and civic activities. From this position, newcomers can become more aware of or involved with global environmental issues and campaigns and develop awareness of their own impact on the environment and learn to take action to reduce their consumption of energy and greenhouse gases and reduce their overall footprint.
